Day 7 - After yesterdays push to 5000m we were confident that today there wouldn't be any issues. Another morning of perfect blue skies and an easy walk up until lunchtime. After lunch was a steep climb up the Thokla Pass. We were all breathing heavily at this point and the ascent seemed to go on for some time. Eventually the route leveled out where we came across an area covered with tombstones and memorials to those who had died in the region, ranging from large impressive marble plaques to small piles of stones and overlooking one of the best views we had seen. Not long from here we would reach our last pre-base camp overnight stop, Lobuche (4910m). The rest of the days trekking was easy going as we followed alongside the runoff from the Khumbu Glacier.
Eventually we made it to Lobuche. We had lunch and checked into our rooms. The menus each day were pretty much identical. Food ranged from a variety of Noodle dishes, Soups, rice, potatoes, eggs and curry. There really was a lot more than what I was expecting.
Our guide Raz had told us that if we had the energy we could take a small excursion onto the nearby ridge that overlooks the Khumbu Glacier. At about 4pm a small group of us set off. Raz must see a lot of snow all year round but that didn't stop him goofing around whenever we came across any. The climb up onto the ridge was a slippery test of balance as we dodged each others snow balls. Once up on the top we could look down onto the glacier and listen to its occasional groans and cracks. Also from up there we could see roughly where base camp was. It looked about 1 hour away but was actually approx 6hrs. After an energetic photo shoot we made our way back to our tea house.
That evening Gavin was very unwell. He was suffering from a very bad headache and spent the whole evening in bed.
