Day 1 - We started with a 30 minute flight out of Kathamdu to Lukla (2860m). We landed on one of the world's shortest and steepest runways but it was suprisingly smooth although the plane had to slow down extremely quick. Shortly after arriving we met our guides and the porters who would be carrying the main bulk of our kit. It was surprising to see how much these guys would be carrying. I was relieved that I only packed what was essential. Unfortunately Michelle was already feeling light headed due to the altitude. The trek started with an easy descent of approx 250m (3-4hr) to our first overnight stop at the small village Phakding (2610m).
We arrived at our Tea House in Phakding for lunch and with plenty of daylight remaining decided to go off on a wander. We had a bit of a play down by the riverside and met some of the local children.
That evening back at the tea house was a cold one. We huddled around the tables playing cards, drinking Everest Beer and we also tried part fermented Firewater which is a strong spirit made using Millet seeds. Saying our huts were drafty was an understatement but they were clean and the beds were reasonably comfortable.

Relaxing by the river. We were goofing around by a river in the Himalayas. Just slightly overwhelming.
