Another route taken from the brilliant book ' scrambles in the dark peak' get it - here!
I must be close now to getting onto kinder from every established route and it seems i have been saving the best routes for last. last week it was up red brook and today it was up crowden clough.
This really is a gorgeous ascent and it gives you the option of skipping the more scrambley section by veering off on a steep path that leads right up to crowden tower. we wanted the scramble though and boy was it a good one. so many great places to stop and take in your surroundings so we did so several times. with plenty of rock pools and huge boulders to kick back on we really made the most of it. when we finally topped out it was a short walk over to crowden tower which is well worth a stop and then the option to explore the woolpacks. we did both and then headed east to upper tor, nether tor and then descended using the track between golden clough and ringing roger back down to edale.
heading for crowden clough from upper booth
small footbridge over crowden brook
the sign tells us we are heading in the right direction. just need to keep following the brook.
that lump of rock on the top there is crowden tower. you'll see us on it soon enough :)
looking back. cracking weather!
a fair bit of stream hopping from one side to the other.
Can you make out the faint path on the left? it takes you straight up to crowden tower if you don't fancy getting a bit more hands on with the boulders.
so we have passed the direct path now and we are following the water up. it's here that the rocks get bigger and it gets steeper.
another look back
so in the book 'scrambles in the dark park' it shows a picture of this section. in fact it is on the front cover. The difference is though, there is no water in the picture unlike this one. with good hand holds you can just cling to the rock left of the waterfall but be very careful though!
andy taking the only line we could go today
you can just see andy ahead of me. plenty more boulders to climb over but we are close to the top.
out of the clough and heading to crowden tower which is just around the corner.
