Pretty much since my hiking addiction began, i have taken my work colleagues out into the hills with me. These days i work on a fire department where half of my crew are U.S. military personnel. taking friends on hikes is great but taken friends who are foreign to uk on hikes is even more exciting. I love the fact that they have no idea where i am taking them or what they are going to need to do to get from the start to the finish line. i also like to show off how beautiful our country is.
today i'm outnumbered as the only brit on the hike, I've got some friends along from the fire department who have never been to the peak district before. Now what can i offer them that has features which will have particular interest to them? How about a U.S. military aircraft crash site?
setting off from glossop
the craggy shelf benches in the distance
Following the broken wall on the lower shelf
Looking out towards glossop and manchester beyond
steep descent down to yellowslacks brook
here it starts. the fun pool hopping, bog jumping clamber up yellowslacks brook
kyle feelin it
jake taking the lead
rod and matt trying to keep their feet dry. too late for matt who look a dive into a pool.
and jake is in!
very gradually gaining height
its getting rockier
here comes the steepest and most challenging section requiring a bit of scrambling
when we finished our shift at work this morning, the weather was absolutely miserable. We were all prepared for waterproofs but it turned out to be a t-shirt day! this was a rare occasion where i traveled north and found the sunshine.
Kyle and Veronica houseman exhilarated after the scramble
B-SHIFT FIREFIGHTERS
HERN STONES. I HADN'T TOL ANYONE ABOUT THE NEXT FEATURE. UNFORTUNATELY A WALKER GAVE IT AWAY BY SHOUTING OVER TO ME "WHAT DIRECTION IS THE PLANE WRECK?"
HEADING THROUGH THE PEATY MOORLAND. THE TERRAIN UP ON BLEAKLOW IS PROBABLY THE MOST RUGGED IN ENGLAND.
CRASH SITE OF THE USAF BOEING RB-29A SUPERFORTRESS
CRASHED HERE ON HIGHER SHELF STONES IN 1948. IT'S SURPRISING HOW MUCH DEBRIS STILL REMAINS.
ALL 13 CREW MEMBERS WERE KILLED
ALL SMILES AT HIGHER SHELF STONES TRIG POINT
THE VIEW FROM HIGHER SHELF STONES. WE WERE REALLY LUCKY WITH THE WEATHER TODAY AND THE DRY CONDITIONS UNDER FOOT. BLEAKLOW CAN BE VERY DIFFERENT A LOT OF THE YEAR. i'VE ALWAYS WONDERED IF THE USE OF 'BLEAK' WAS DESCRIBING THE LAND.
KINDER SCOUT PLATEAU OFF IN THE DISTANCE
CROOK CLOUGH
FOLLOWING THE DOCTORS GATE PATH
LOOKING ACROSS TO ASHTON CLOUGH. ANOTHER GREAT ASCENT ROUTE UP ONTO BLEAKLOW
It's a long drive from where we work to hike and return home but there were no complaints. hoping for a normal world next time, where we can easily grab a pint afterwards.
