Two of my favorite peak district walks interlock. this one and my druid walk around harthill and stanton moors. Andrew hadn't done either, so we started with lathkill dale. Not only is this a stunning area but it rewards the walker to detour and explore the amazing features along the way.
I like to start this walk from moor lane car park and then drop down into lathkill dale. andrew on the limestone way.
continuing on the limestone way in calling low dale
down into lathkill dale looking up the cliffs surrounding us
the river lathkill rising from surrounding springs
following the path beside the river lathkill
mill stone
no water today but not always the case.
bateman's house
an interesting shaft to show people. Well worth exploring this small feature. Don't worry, its not scary and has a nice light feature to see further below.
hard to see the water at the bottom in this photo and not easy to take. A long exposure helped provide some needed light.
a dry section of the river bed which looks to be man made. i could be wrong.
Andrew next to reamins of an old aquaduct.
a nearby mineshaft just off the main path
another mine entrance near the mandale engine house. To find some of these features you need to look out for the faint trails leading off from the main path. I'm sure i haven't explored them all.
mandale engine house ruins
I always stop to admire this old stone building and wonder what it's use was. If you know, drop me a message.
continuing along the river lathkill
another building i always stop to look at. Something very cold about it. It's beautiful but would i want to drive up towards it at the end of the day? Yeah, I'd take it! Oh, and it's called Raper Lodge which doesn't help it.
Semi-circle weir near Raper Lodge
Footbridge at the bottom of Youlgreave
Now following the River Bradford
It's amazing walking along here, past the weirs and admiring the workmanship. It's very overgrown and makes you wonder what it was like in the days it was constructed.
Leaving the wood behind and heading back to the car. This a superb walk and one of by favorites in the Peak District.
